The primary objectives of the ID-RRG have been:

  • To develop a high quality multidisciplinary research group with strong collaborative interactions.
  • To generate and share clinical and scientific knowledge with researchers, clinicians and the public.
  • To influence patient care through focused translational research.

In the past year, members of the ID-RRG have attracted over £5 million in external grant funding, supporting a total of 19 research projects. Recently funded projects include AMRAP commissioned research, and grants from the Wellcome Trust , the BBSRC and the MRC . Members of the ID-RRG have been responsible for attracting in excess of £22.3 million in research funding to Northern Ireland since 2002.

ID-RRG members have continued to publish their research work in the highest quality peer-reviewed scientific journals, including Nature Medicine, Nature Immunology, Blood, the BMJ, Infection & Immunity, and the Journal of Virology.

ImageThe ID-RRG currently has 27 Full Members (Principal Investigators) and 61 Associate Members , and hosts a thriving Invited Speakers Programme, in addition to bi-annual Away Day retreats. 13 research seminars by internationally renowned speakers have been held during the past year, including events held jointly with other RRGs. ID-RRG Away Days provide a forum which allow delegates from throughout Northern Ireland and the Republic of Ireland to meet with each other, and to network with researchers from other countries. These popular events continue to be an opportunity for exchange of ideas, identification of strategic priorities, development of collaborations and exploring translational aspects of existing work. They also allow currently funded grant holders to present their research findings, and to see presentations given by other leading infectious diseases researchers.

In addition, the ID-RRG provides opportunities for personal development, training, and mentoring, as well as financial support for attending academic conferences and short research visits, through the Cohesion Fund programme.
